What is Nooch?

Nooch is an alternate name to nutritional yeast. This is deactivated yeast grown on beet molasses and sugarcane which is often sold commercially as a health food product. It usually comes in the form of yellow powder or flakes. Purportedly, nooch is a great source of potassium, vitamin B and protein. Even better, it’s low in fat, sodium and free from sugar and dairy. Nooch has a strong cheesy flavor or sometimes also described as nutty; this is often used to substitute cheese for vegetarian dishes and snacks.

Feeding Nooch to Cats

Numerous cat owners took to the internet to share their discovery on how their cats seem to love eating nooch. This nutritional yeast isn’t the main meal though and is just used to sprinkle on a cat’s food. Aside from the nutritional benefits of nooch, it is said to be helpful for cats who are picky with their food.

Cat owners are advised not to feed too much nooch to their kitties or making it a substitute for your kitty’s meal or treats. Up to 1 teaspoon of nutritional yeast a day sprinkled on top of your cat’s food is fine. Additionally, try not to feed cats nooch on a daily basis; instead, keep it as a special food addition to make your kitty more interested in it.

Nutritional Yeast is not Brewer’s Yeast

Nooch or nutritional yeast and brewer’s yeast are related but they’re not the same thing. Brewer’s yeast also have its nutritional benefits but it tends to have a more bitter taste. Some cats are said to like this product too which is good because it’s also claimed to be good for felines. Cat owners have to be careful though as some brewer’s yeast products contain garlic which is toxic for cats.

Health Caution

Again, feeding nooch to cats is alright as long as cat owners limit it. There is still no definite recommendation backed by science regarding the benefit of nutritional yeast for cats. But just like with people consuming health food, medicine, or supplements, it can be effective for some but does nothing for others. So, while it is true that nooch has nutrients to offer and has a special feature of getting finicky kitties to eat, it’s still best and safer to try with tiny amounts first or even better, to consult with your vet. Moreover, it’s vital to get nutritional yeast products with high quality that’s guaranteed free from additives or GMO and is processed safely.
