Cats don’t easily get thirsty. Many cat owners noted that they hardly see their cats drink water and when they did, it’s often just a few licks. This feline behavior has caused cat parents to worry if their cats are drinking enough water to be healthy. So, to address this concern, we will be tackling how much water a cat needs per day.
Depends on Your Cat’s Size
Firstly, how much water a cat needs depends on his or her size. According to Preventive Vet, the daily water intake cats need is between 3.5 – 4.5 ounces of water per 5 pounds of the cat’s body weight. So if your cat weighs around 10 pounds or 4.5 kilograms, he or she needs approximately 9 ounces of water. Picturing this amount, it’s supposedly about half an average bottle of water.
Depends on Your Cat’s Diet
The next criteria on how much water a cat needs depends on their diet. While cats need up to 4.5 ounces of water, this doesn’t necessarily equate to liquids. It can be consumed through their diet especially if you give your cat wet food instead of dry kibbles. A can of wet food consists about 80% water which can add up to your cat’s daily water intake. The rule to remember here is, if you feed your cat wet food then you don’t need your kitty to drink more water; an additional 2-4 ounces of fresh water is enough to supplement your kitty’s daily hydration. However, if your cat’s diet consists of all dry food which only has about 10% moisture, then your cat needs to drink about half a bottle of water or the amount dependent on your kitty’s size.
Depends on Weather
Just like humans, cats may get thirstier during hot days. So, especially in summer, how much water a cat needs may increase because of the need to cool down one’s body temperature. However, there’s likely no dramatic changes in their water intake. An additional 1-3 ounces can be expected but if your cat remains in well-shaded areas like the indoors and you maintain their wet food diet then the amount of water a cat needs would most likely remain the same.
How to Check if Your Cat is Well Hydrated
There are two simple things you can do to check if your cat is well hydrated. First, you can approximate the amount of water your cat has consumed for the day by checking the water bowl. This may not be very exact as water can evaporate and if there are multiple cats living in your house. Nevertheless, it can still be a helpful measure. The second simple way to check if your cat isn’t dehydrated is to pull up the loose skin at the nape of his or her neck. If it springs back then you’re more or less assured that your cat is hydrated. However, if it hangs back or slowly recedes, you can suspect your kitty isn’t consuming enough water.
How to Keep Your Cat Hydrated
To make sure your feline friend consumes enough water for the day, there are two simple things you can do. First, feed your cat wet food instead of dry cat food. This will not only keep your cat well fed but also well hydrated. Second, if possible, change your cat’s water at least twice a day to keep it clean and fresh. Lastly, you may add an ice cube or two to their water bowl to keep their water cool and interesting.
Stay hydrated and healthy cats and hoomans!
