What Cats Get From Eating Bugs

Cats love to hunt, and they love grabbing almost anything with their mouths. Anything moving can trigger cats’ hunting instincts and bugs are among the best targets. Now, the danger is when our calicos hunt bugs and accidentally or consciously consume them. One or two bugs may be safe; still, depending on the kind or what these insects bring, but what cats get from eating bugs can spell danger to their health.

Choking

The first problem with eating bugs is choking. If a cat hunts and catches an insect in its mouth, it can go directly into their throat and result to choking. Another is if a kitty isn’t able to chew the bug well, a chunk can obstruct in his throat which will also result to choking and gagging.

Diarrhea

Eating bugs make cats sick especially when a calico ingests quite a lot. This can upset his stomach and result to diarrhea. Another thing that can cause stomach problems is when bugs with hard exoskeletons like roaches, beetles and grasshoppers, can’t be processed and ingested by the kitty’s gastrointestinal tract. This can cause stomach pains, vomiting and may also lead to diarrhea.

Poison

Some types of insects have poison in them which they use for their defense and offense. Stink bugs for instance have secretions that can irritate a cat’s stomach. While this is not lethal, it’s poisonous enough to cause excessive vomiting and drooling to kitties. Supposedly, some insects by their very nature are poisonous for feline like fireflies and lovebugs.

So, these are what cats get from eating bugs. Vets reassure cat parents that the danger from ingesting insects is very small. However, this doesn’t negate the risks listed above. Cat owners can’t always look out for their kitties, whether they’re hunting roaches with minimal risks or a black widow spider which can be fatal. A good tip is to keep your house clean to keep insects away, restrain your kitty from going to places that are home to insects like tall grasses, and finally, provide great toys which your calico can spend its hunting instincts on.
